We all watch what we put into our bodies because that has a direct impact on our appearance. How much do we monitor our media consumption? This post is not about turning off the news, abandoning everything popular culture has to offer, and moving to a house you built yourself in Alaska. It is about another way to operate with consciousness.
One afternoon, when I was in college, I walked into the kitchen where one of my roommates, Kari*, was listening to some music. I have no idea what the song was but it was definitely a rap/hip hop song that was maybe mixed with some sort of electronic who knows what. It was your typical rap song. I was listening to it while preparing lunch, really listening intently to the lyrics and I asked Kari, “what are you listening to?” She smiled, knowing I was referring to the lyrics, which at the time could be perceived traditionally to be pretty vulgar. Kari said, “I know, it’s trash, but it helps me focus.”
I am not criticizing her choice in music at all. I have no judgements around those lyrics. I am the first to admit that “Birthday Song” by 2 Chainz was my anthem a couple years ago. I love Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz, Nelly Furtado, Ariana Grande, Martin Garrix, the occasional Justin Bieber… it’s not like I sit around listening to kundalini yoga music all day, though sometimes that is nice too. It is just that a lot of people don’t think about what they are listening to, watching, reading etc. I don’t know about you, but I am one of those people that when they really like a song they listen to it on repeat, all day, every day. Songs, especially, loop around in our heads like programs. A lot of songs are about money, objectifying women, not caring about people, being in “the club”, drinking, etc. if you take the time to really listen to them. That gets imprinted into all of our subconsciouses and then becomes a huge part of our culture. This is a bit of the “chicken and the egg” problem. I am not sure what came first: our core societal values or the music that contains these themes. Either way, it does exist. By the way, none of this is “bad”. I am only bringing up these themes because of what is happening in America as of late and some people want a change. For anyone who is unsure of what I am talking about, I am referring to the #metoo movement, consent culture, etc. This is all very prominent right now and I am using it as an example to describe a couple ways in which we can co create our own realities. (Side note: I have no judgements (opinions sure, as does everyone else) on these themes I have mentioned. However you interpret and integrate them is unique, special, and Love. This world has enough space for everyone to feel safe with their authentic selves. All of these posts are about Love and discussion.) I’m not even going to say “everything in moderation”. Just be conscious about what you are bringing into your life, especially if you want a change in the Universal Consciousness. You know how they say “you vote with every dollar”? Same thing. We all contribute to this reality together. If you want “insert media example here” to be a part of your experience, great. At least give yourself a choice.
What I also realized is that I consume a lot of information every single day and that is why giving it some thought matters. Just the sheer volume of my media intake, like many other people’s, is incredible. I love listening to a lot of podcasts as of late but I used to watch a lot of television. I have never been a huge fan of the news, but I do keep up enough to know what is going on. None of these mediums are better than the other. It is what you’re getting out of it that is important. You are always in the right place at the right time, taking in what you need to, when you need it. Whatever you choose is perfect for you. This is where it may get a bit confusing. There are infinite possibilities in which you can choose to experience your reality. All of it is Love. Thus you cannot go “right” or “wrong”. I am just passing along the message that you have a choice in what you are experiencing. Whatever you choose will always be Love. It isn’t necessarily easy to be conscious about everything you do, listen to, etc. every single moment of every single day. We are engaging twenty four hours a day with everything that composes our reality. That is a lot of time! However, we also have power over what we let in. Knowing and being aware of that is what I am trying to emphasize.
What you are listening to, reading, etc. is all so important. It is at least as important as the food you eat. Think about everything you consume daily. It directly impacts your mood, thoughts, emotions and thus your entire reality (another post will be written on this soon). Here is a quick example: I am one of those people where my mood is directly impacted by music. When I am sad, if I listen to “1-800-273-8255”, chances are I’m going to be even more sad and emotional. If I then listen to “Africa”, my mood would change. That is a small reality shift. When I listen to podcasts about multidimensional beings and realities, I have an existential crisis. It is all directly impacting our reality. Imagine how much bigger the reality shift could be with a conscious choice in television, books, podcasts, etc. or whatever you are including in your experience. Like I said before, this may not be easy all the time, especially if it doesn’t come naturally to you. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be a burden. Everything you choose to experience is an opportunity to live whatever life you want.
The other day I was driving in the car, not listening to anything. I was just observing my thoughts and how much they have shifted over the last couple of years. There are so many things that have changed within my life, but one of the big ones was the media I was bringing into my experience. I don’t even know what I used to think about four years ago. The media you consume has that much of an impact on your reality. Try it. Maybe even for a week and see how you feel, if you want to observe what kind of role everything you are taking in plays in your life. Always remember: you cannot go “wrong”. If you realize you don’t love the same music anymore, change it. It is no better or worse than your previous tastes. Just different. There is no need to have judgement around it because everything is Love.
This idea of conscious consumption can apply to anything: food, music, podcasts, television, people, clothing… anything and everything you interact with. These are all simple but powerful energies and ways that you can shape your reality. There are an infinite amount of energies I have not listed here. They are all powerful. They are all Love. Take responsibility for everything you allow into your life. Be empowered. That is really what this is about. Don’t let anyone tell you something is “good” or “bad” for you. No one knows you better than you do. Use your intuition, your gut feeling. If this way of life is not for you, you don’t even have to do that either 🙂 I would be happy even if you disagree with everything I have written, but you know you have the power to curate your reality in any way you want.
with unconditional love, katie
